We could all speak about how difficult this recession has been to every corner of society but the human services sector has been especially hard hit. Fortunately, though, and despite several steep challenges, Wellspring completed FY 2009 with expanded housing and service options for persons with psychiatric illness, and the capacity for doing more in the future. Our balance sheet became stronger, the agency’s operations became more efficient, and our successful client outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of our supportive services in our clients’ quests for recovery. Therefore, we enthusiastically thank every donor, supporter, friend, colleague, partner, volunteer, staff and board member for their good work in promoting Wellspring’s mission throughout the past year.
Wellspring accomplishes its mission of promoting our clients’ recovery through our role as the region’s lead provider of supportive housing. Effective collaboration with the region’s other key mental health providers such as Seven Counties Services, University of Louisville Hospital’s Emergency Psychiatric Services, Central State Hospital, and Bridgehaven is critical to this work.
It takes a comprehensive system of quality services to provide choice and continuity to clients as they work to better understand their psychiatric illnesses and move toward recovery.
Wellspring’s Psychiatric Crisis Stabilization Centers and Supportive Housing services have long been recognized as core components of an effective, comprehensive mental health system. The stability and dignity of housing provides the foundation for our clients’ journeys of recovery and every new Wellspring venture strengthens our community’s mental health system.
Key accomplishments this year that will make the future better for both Wellspring and its clients, include:
• Completing the construction of the Wellspring Bridge Apartments - a debt free, attractive, energy efficient and low maintenance eight-unit apartment complex
• Launching into the early development stages of three new supported housing projects
• Renovating four of Wellspring’s high-use residential facilities
• Beginning the development of Wellspring’s new administrative offices; we anticipate occupancy in mid 2010, and
• Raising 75% of our $2,100,000 Capital Campaign goal, thanks to a very dedicated Campaign Steering Committee!
These accomplishments each have their own merit in promoting Wellspring’s mission, but taken together they represent momentum for changing how this community regards its citizens with mental illness.
A final, but key accomplishment for Wellspring is the smooth transition of executive leadership. On October 1st, Kathy became Wellspring’s second-ever Executive Director, following Steve, Wellspring’s founding Executive Director. We have worked side by side for 27 years in implementing the agency’s development under the board’s leadership. Our working relationship pivoted around a common set of values and a shared vision of what Wellspring is about. While this transition brings both sadness and joy for us, most importantly it assures that Wellspring’s momentum will continue as it has since the agency’s inception.
We thank all of you for the support that you have shown to each of us, and we trust that your investment in Wellspring’s mission will continue to be strong.
Gratefully, Kathy Dobbins and Steve Perkins
